Empowering libraries to meet the changing needs of their communities

Eric van Lubeek, Vice President, Global Library Services, and Managing Director, EMEA and APAC

Libraries today are faced with a rapidly changing environment, evolving user needs, and increased pressure to measure and communicate their impact to their stakeholders. OCLC services help libraries address these challenges by sharing data, streamlining workflows, and connecting people to the knowledge held in the world's library collections. During this session, Eric van Lubeek will share news of developments in both the APAC region and globally as well as exciting developments that have happened in the last 12-18 months, including news on linked data, machine learning, and new analytics services.

The next evolution of the information ecosystem: linked data, machine learning, and AI

Dr. Axel Kaschte, Product Strategy Director, OCLC EMEA and APAC

The continued focus of libraries is on new ways to facilitate both the creation and sharing of knowledge, and as the volume and variety of publications increases (especially using new online channels), metadata and metadata expertise is more important than ever. OCLC has been working with growing intensity to utilize the game-changing possibilities of linked data technologies to not only provide better ways to discover and represent the library material but also to do so with lower effort in curating the metadata e.g., by including a wider group of experts. In this presentation, Dr. Axel Kaschte will describe the state-of-the-art infrastructure called WorldCat® Entities, which allows a seamless addition of new services while maintaining the stability of existing services. This will help each library to gradually grow into using and benefiting from this new approach to metadata management including the use of technologies like artificial intelligence (AI). Evolving library data into linked data will help in freeing the knowledge contained in library collections and will connect it to the knowledge streams that inform our everyday lives—on the web, through smart devices, and reaching more users than before.
